NHSN Data Submission
NHSN Data Submission is an optional feature that allows EMResource to submit data to NHSN based on requirements from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Currently, the CMS requires hospitals and other specified facilities to report 55 specific data elements related to respiratory diseases. These data elements are collectively labeled as Hospital Respiratory Data (HRD). If these hospitals and facilities do not report HRD, they will not receive Medicare payments. EMResource can collect and submit HRD to NHSN. To participate in NHSN Data Submission through EMResource, contact your Client Success Manager (CSM).
Set Up Resources for Data Submission
After NHSN Data Submission is enabled for your region, you can set up a resource to submit HRD by configuring the following statuses. HRD will not be sent for a resource until all three statuses are properly configured.

Submission Periods
EMResource sends HRD to NHSN at regular intervals based on the reporting frequency for the resource.
For resources with a daily reporting frequency, EMResource submits the current values of the 55 HRD fields at 4:30 PM Eastern Time each day. If none of the HRD fields were updated in the past 24 hours, no data is sent for that resource.
For resources with a weekly reporting frequency, EMResource submits the current values of the 55 HRD fields at 4:30 PM Eastern Time every Tuesday. These values are used for the prior week, beginning on Sunday and ending on Saturday. If none of the HRD fields were updated in the past nine days, no data is sent for that resource.
In the related view or event, the Comments column displays the most recent date when EMResource submitted a resource's data to NHSN.
Not Applicable Data
The documentation on the CDC's website instructs hospitals to enter a value of 9999 for fields that are not applicable, such as Adult ICU Beds in a children's hospital. However, in EMResource, it is instead recommended to leave the value blank (--). This prevents values of 9999 from being added to summary totals. EMResource automatically converts blank values to 9999 when submitting data to NHSN. You can clear a status in the Update Status window by entering a value of --.
Check for Data Errors
You can check for validation errors in your HRD by generating the Resource Validation Report. You can also use the HHS/CDC Last Reporting Result status to check for errors or warnings from the CDC. For more information, see Check the Status of Hospital Respiratory Data.
