Build an Operational Map

Audience: WebEOC Nexus administrators responsible for implementing the Maps add-on and configuring interactive maps for operational use.

Goal: Create an operational map that displays WebEOC Nexus data, provides geographic situational awareness, and can be used by authorized users during emergency operations.

What You'll Learn

In this guide, you'll learn how to create a map, configure map and board layers, enable boards to use maps, embed maps into boards, display timeline data, and verify that users can access the completed mapping solution.

What You'll Accomplish

By the end of this guide, you'll have a fully configured operational map that displays WebEOC Nexus board data, supports geographic visualization, and is available to users with the appropriate permissions.

Introduction

The Maps add-on extends WebEOC Nexus by allowing you to visualize operational information geographically. Rather than viewing incidents, resources, or requests as individual records, users can see them displayed on interactive maps that provide real-time situational awareness.

This guide walks through the complete mapping workflow—from creating a map to enabling boards, configuring layers, and verifying that users can successfully interact with operational data.

Follow these steps

  1. Before configuring maps, review the Maps documentation to understand the capabilities available with the Maps add-on. Review maps features and functionality.

  2. Create the map that will display your operational information. During this step, you'll define the map and its basic properties.
    Create a map.

  3. Configure the geographic layers that provide context for your operational data. Map layers can include roads, political boundaries, imagery, and other GIS data.

Add map layers (available with the Maps add-on).

  4. Configure board layers so WebEOC Nexus records appear on the map. Board layers connect operational data to geographic locations.

    Add board layers.

  5. Enable the appropriate boards so users can display records on the map.

    Enable Boards to Use Maps

  6. Grant users access to maps by assigning them through Feature Groups. Review the map permissions before deployment.

    Assign maps through feature groups.

  7. Optionally, display maps directly within a board to provide users with geographic context while working.

Embed a map in a board.

  8. Optionally, if your operational workflow requires historical or time-based visualization, configure the timeline feature.

View data on a timeline in maps.

  9. Test the mapping solution.

    Verify that:

    • Users can open the map.

    • Board data appears correctly.

    • Map layers display as expected.

    • Board layers update correctly.

    • Embedded maps function properly.

    • Timeline data displays correctly (if configured)
